The Process

Each piece begins as a simple piece of wood and is transformed through carving, fire, brushing, and oil—revealing a balance between the natural character of the material and the shape created by hand.

About the Artist

I’m Phil Brictson, an artist, designer, and woodworker based in Illinois. I approach woodworking through the lens of a designer, exploring organic form, negative space, texture, and movement.

Each sculpture begins as a simple piece of wood and is shaped by hand through carving, fire, brushing, and oil. I’m interested in the tension between the natural character of the material and the forms created through the process.

Every piece is made by hand and exists as an original, one-of-one work.
